survivor “eye of the tiger”
i totally missed this when i was doing my favourite albums of all-time list a while back.  unfortunately i didn’t have the CD then.  i just bought it the other day.  outta sight/outta mind, i guess.
i didn’t own the vinyl, either.  it was my brothers, but i listened to it way more than he did.  i LOVE every song on this record.  i think they all could’ve been a single.  however, they only released “eye of the tiger” (with “rocky III”, of course) and then moved on to the next record.
after that, they got new singer and had a pretty solid number of hits, but they just didn’t have the magic that this album has.

TOP 20 FAVOURITE ALBUMS
#1 def leppard “pyromania”
this is THE album that really introduced me to rock n roll.  sure, i had been a KISS fan when i was a kid, but that was more the spectacle and not the music.  this was the first time i really heard the music.
the first song i heard was “photograph” on the radio.  i was blown away.  my little ears had mostly listened to what my ‘rents listened to which was mostly country stations.  i had heard some pop sings and what-not.  but nothing like this.
so, this is the most important record for me.  it shaped me into what i’ve become and turned me into a a man-ish type person.

#2 brandi carlile “brandi carlile”/pete yorn “day i forgot”

these two are tied for 2nd ‘cos they were very instrumental in helping me through a very dark time.  long story.

brandi’s album is just beautiful through and through.  she has a great voice and although her other records are just as good, there’s something about this simple acoustic disc that is perfect.

as for pete, this record has some of my favourite tracks ever.  it’s just a great, fun record to put on and chill.

#3 the beatles “let it be”
this album includes one of the greatest songs ever to be recorded by man, “let it be”.  i’ve always been a beatles guy thanks to my mum and i’m very proud of that fact.  thanks, mum.
the record would probably rank higher, but i put this together with the records i listen to straight through the most and this album has a few tracks that i skip.  but all in all, it’s a great frickin’ record.

#4 pearl jam “yield”
in my heart of hearts i think that this is most beautiful record that PJ has released.  all the others are pretty damn good, but there’s something about this one that really appeals to me.
it’s a great highway record, too.  listening to it while driving is the best way to experience it.

#5 journey “escape”
another relic from my childhood.  this album launched journey into the stratosphere.  there are so many singles on this album i’m not even gonna bother listing them.  they were able to hold on to the top for one more album, then steve perry’s ego got the better of him and he destroyed the band.
they were able to have one more go when they reunited for “trial by fire”, which is a decent record, but they just couldn’t capture that lightning they way they did in the mid-80s.

#6 aimee mann “i’m with stupid”
she had a big hit with her band ‘til tuesday in the 80’s but after that she kinda fell into obscurity.
i didn’t even know she was still around at all until i saw the first teaser trailer for “magnolia” and they played her song “momentum”.  i thought the song was awesome and rushed out to find out who it was.  i found the soundtrack for the movie and two of her old albums, “whatever” and this one.  “whatever” is hit or miss but “stupid” is a great record from beginning to end.
she is now one of my all-time favourite artists…she is amazing.

#7 olivia newton-john “physical”
ok.  i’ll admit that the main reason this album is on the list is because of the MAJOR crush i had on ONJ for most of my formative years.  and that another main reason for this record being on the list is cosmetic: i LOVE this cover.
the rest of the reason is because of the music itself.  there a some good tracks here the biggest hit, of course, being “physical”.  this song took ONJ out of the country/pop realm and into pop icon status (of course, starring in “grease” didn’t hurt…starring in “xanadu” didn’t help…but the soundtrack did!!)
i will always have a warm spot in my heart for olivia.

#9 matthew sweet “100% fun”
i got this record from a friend and listened to the hell out of it!!  straight-through, it’s a great listen but there are some really stand out tracks on this disc, as well…”sick of myself” was my personal theme song for many years.
after this album, sweet had one more great record and then, unfortunately just couldn’t follow through.  his last couple just couldn’t grab me.  and it sucks ‘cos i really like the guy.

another “concept” album, this one tells the story of the old west.  it’s a great listen all the way through.  it also includes one of the greatest songs ever written, “desperado”.

#11 queensryche “operation: mindcrime”
one of the best “concept” albums i have ever heard, EVER.
my first experience with this band was a guy in high school ALWAYS wore a queensryche t-shirt.  i had no idea who they were until i went to my first concert ever: DEF LEPPARD.
queensryshe was the opening act and they totally blew me away.  they were awesome.  then, a few days later i saw the video for “eye of a stranger” on MTV (back when MTV actually had to do with music).  i loved it and went out to buy the album the next day.

#12 joe satriani “surfing with the alien”
i bought this only because the silver surfer was on the cover.  i had no idea who JS was or what could possibly be on this album.
when i got home me and some friends put it in and were speechless.  utterly speechless.
it was just brilliant.
after hearing it, i bought every satch record available.

#18 faith no more “the real thing”
i had to do some re-arranging of my list here ‘cos i totally forgot about this album.  this was in my player for months without changing it.  at the time it was totally new and one-of-a-kind…every song a winner.  i still pop it in now and again and listen to the whole thing a few times.

#13 the black crowes “amorica”
the first 2 records from the crowes were great, but there’s something about this 3rd one that really stands out for me.  and it’s NOT just the cover *wink*!!
they sort of transcended the bluesy-rock vibe they had in the first two and added some funky quirky sounds.  there are the more traditional songs here but there are a few that have just a unique sound that i can’t put my finger on.
this record also includes one of my favourite songs of all time: “cursed diamond”, it’s just incredible.

#14 30 seconds to mars “a beautiful lie”
when i first heard that the guy from “my so called life” had a band i balked.  so many actors tried their hand and failed.
to my surprise the first record was pretty damn good.  that first record was much approved upon with this release.  they took all the elements that work’d from the first disc and tweaked them here to make a perfect radio-friendly rock anthem album.
